James Cameron
James Cameron is working on two Avatar sequels

James Cameron has taken a swipe at studios who add 3D to films in post-production, saying that 3D retro-fitting should only be used for classic movies like Jaws or ET.

The Avatar director said it had been a “mistake” to attempt to add 3D to the latest Harry Potter film, the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.

And he predicted that the practice of adding 3D to movies in post-production would end with the widespread take-up of 3D by TV broadcasters.

Speaking at the Blu-Con event in Beverly Hills, Cameron repeated his assertion that studios should not attempt to “shoehorn” 3D conversion – after the film has been shot – into the normal post-production time frame.

“I maintain you can’t do a good conversion of a two-hour movie with high quality in a few weeks like they tried to do with Clash of the Titans.

“I don’t mean to throw that movie under the bus because my buddy Sam [Worthington, star of Avatar] is in it, but I think everybody realised that this was a point at which people had gone too far.”

Cameron added: “You see another stumble with the most recent Harry Potter movie from the same studio making the same mistake – except really getting spanked for it now because they didn’t get the film done.

“They announced it in 3D – threw a bunch of money trying to convert it to 3D in post-production and it simply didn’t work. They just didn’t get it done.”

3D ET

Last month, Warner Bros said it could not complete the 3D conversion of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 in time for its 19 November UK and US release date.

Warner Bros said it did not want to keep fans waiting for the film.

Cameron said: “My personal philosophy is that post conversion should be used for one thing and one thing only – which is to take library titles that are favourites that are proven, and convert them into 3D – whether it’s Jaws or ET or Indiana Jones, Close Encounters… or Titanic.

A scene from Avatar Avatar overtook Cameron’s own Titanic to become the highest-grossing film ever

“Unless you have a time machine to go back and shoot it in 3D, you have no other choice. The best alternative is if you want to release a movie in 3D – make it in 3D.”

At the end of October, it was announced that the first sequel to blockbuster hit Avatar will be released in December 2014 with a second to follow 12 months later.

Avatar holds the record for the highest-grossing film ever, having earned some $2.77 billion (£1.76 billion) at the global box office. A “special edition” 2D Blu-ray version of Avatar is set for release in November, with a 3D Blu-ray release in the pipeline.

Cameron predicted that the days of 3D conversion in movies were numbered.

“The thing that’s going to be the coffin nail for conversion is when the broadcasters start broadcasting thousands, if not tens of thousands of hours a year in 3D.

“If you’ve got 5,000 cameras doing live sports feeding in over many different network delivery systems, it’s going to be pretty hard for Hollywood producers to claim that 3D is just too complicated to make a movie in 3D, when it’s being done every day by people a lot less talented and a lot less well-funded.”

The director also said that glasses-free 3D would be a reality within a decade.

“Once we get to auto-stereoscopic, that’s watching 3-D without glasses, it is going to be the way we watch all of our media. That’s probably eight to 10 years away.”

Do pyramids offer evidence for the mythical Atlantis?

Part 1 of a two part Horizon special explores the mystery of whether Atlantis really did exist. Was there really, 12,000 years ago, a fabulous city whose people had already evolved all the trappings of civilisation – sophisticated culture and society, writing, astronomy, religion, monument-building – while everyone else was still living in the Stone Age?

Dr. Ken FederEver since Plato first alluded to the mysterious city of Atlantis, destroyed in a terrible flood, the notion of an ancient, lost civilisation has been a compelling myth. The idea was revived in the 19th century to explain the tantalising similarities amongst different far-flung ancient cultures that had no connection with each other – why did so many ancient peoples build pyramids? Why did they write in hieroglyphs? Why was their understanding of astronomy and religion apparently so similar? FloodThe popular explanation was that Atlantis was the common source for all civilisation, that after their homeland was destroyed in a catastrophic flood, 12,000 years ago, the survivors of this super-race then travelled the world, spreading their knowledge to all. But if this theory is right, the whole of human history will have to be rewritten.

HieroglyphsJacqueline Smith’s film explores whether this popular, yet controversial idea could be true. It examines the mysterious similarities between ancient cultures, and traces the fascinating scientific evidence that shows why the theory of Atlantis has been rejected by mainstream science. ‘You could summarise it by saying it’s a load of codswallop’, says Prof. Colin Renfrew. Cutting edge archaeology,Prof. Colin Renfrew geophysics, chemistry, and carbon dating show that there was no single source for all civilisation – that civilisations evolved independently, in many different places, at different times throughout history. Horizon reveals compelling research that traces the true origins of these far-flung cultures, and explains the apparent coincidences that so intrigue us all.

The mobile version of Facebook More than 200 million people are now using Facebook across various mobile platforms

Facebook has set out a strategy to make it as dominant a force in the world of mobile as it is in social networking.

At the heart of its plans is making the mobile phone a more social experience and offering shopping discounts.

The company announced the opportunity for businesses to offer deals to users via their phone.

Facebook also revealed plans for a single sign-on that lets users log in to applications once with their Facebook name and password.

Third party developers are also being offered the chance to add a social layer to their applications, the company said at an event at its Palo Alto offices.

The bid to combine “mobile, social, local” comes as the number of phones proliferate throughout the world.

More than 200 million people are now using Facebook across various mobile platforms, with the company claiming that this is bigger than the iPhone or Android user base.

A year ago, the social networking giant had 65 million mobile users.

Mobile users are also twice as active on Facebook as people who are logging on via personal computers.

“There is obviously a lot of change in the mobile space and also a revolution happening in the social space,” said Mark Zuckerberg, cofounder of Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg founder of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg says Places differs from other location products

“What we have seen is you can rethink any product and rethink it to be social. Mobile is a big area of expansion and a huge new space.

“Combining those things together brings big opportunities for new companies to be built and for industries to be disrupted.”

Game changer

Industry watchers at the event said the single biggest disruption that Facebook introduced was the ability for businesses to offer deals to users who check into the site’s Places feature.

That product was launched in September and allows users to share with their friends where they are and figure out who is nearby.

One of the first partnerships Facebook announced was with the clothing company Gap. It plans to run a campaign offering a free pair of jeans to the first 10,000 users who check in to their local Gap store using Facebook’s mobile application.

In total, Facebook has partnered with 22 major retailers including H&M, Starbucks, McDonalds and the Palms Hotel in Las Vegas.

Small and medium sized businesses with a Facebook page will also be able to offer deals through Facebook’s mobile application.

“This deals product is a game changer,” said Augie Ray from analyst firm Forrester.

“When you consider that check-in sites like Foursquare has five million users and Facebook has 500 million, you begin to get a sense of where this can scale.

“While so many people were eager to try out Facebook Places, it didn’t become that widely adopted because there was no end benefit to the user. That all changes now and helps make Facebook the dominant force on mobile right now,” Mr Ray told BBC News.

Susan Etlinger, a senior analyst with Altimeter Group, said the deals feature takes Facebook in a whole new direction.

Mobile phone with Facebook app Together the deal means access to around 1 billion users

“Facebook is moving into social commerce for real. This will take Facebook out of its comfort zone in a lot of ways and bring them closer to brands.

“They need to be careful. The first group of deals looks nice and looks like they offer value. They will have to continue to maintain that experience because they have a lot of brand equity riding on this,” Ms Etlinger added.

Google and Yahoo are also aggressively trying to tap into users on the go and competing for a share of the growing mobile advertising market.

Analysts have estimated that mobile advertising revenue in the US, for example, will rise to $3.1bn (£1.9bn) in 2013 from $320m in 2009.

Privacy concerns

As always when Facebook introduces new features or products, the issue of privacy reared its head, with concerns being centred more on the developers using third-party applications to extract users’ data.

“While I think Facebook does a good job on this issue, I worry that third parties might accidentally disclose information inappropriately,” said Larry Magid, co-founder of ConnectSafely.org.

“Facebook is, in a sense, endorsing their application developers and the developers are getting access to location information. The concern is what level of security do the app developers have in place to make sure that information never gets out to the wrong people.

“It’s bad enough if people’s posts get out there, but location is something very special and Facebook understands that it needs a better level of protection,” said Mr Magid.

Facebook’s vice president of mobile Erick Tseng tried to allay fears.

“Nothing has changed with the announcement today in terms of security and privacy. It is the exact same model that we have had,” he said.

“Today, we have 550,000 different games and applications running the same single sign-on model. Whenever any application violates our terms of service we will shut down that app.”

Last week, Facebook pulled the plug or denied access to “communications channels” on around a dozen application developers who violated their terms of service.

Following an investigation into online privacy by the Wall Street Journal, Facebook said last month that, in some cases, user IDs were inadvertently being passed onto applications, which is against the company’s policy.

Facebook phone

At the Palo Alto event, Mr Zuckerberg also killed off the constant industry chatter that Facebook will release its own smartphone to compete with the iPhone and Android devices.

“What a novel idea,” Mr Zuckberberg told reporters and developers.

“Our goal is to make everyone social. If you are building an iPhone your goal is to get as many phones out there. Our goal is to be social.”

Those hoping for the company to announce an iPad application were disappointed.

“The iPad? The iPad isn’t mobile. It’s a computer,” said Mr Zuckerberg.

“It’s not a mobile platform the same way a phone is.”

Pedro Leon

Leon’s goal saved Jose Mourinho from his first defeat at Real

Substitute Pedro Leon’s injury-time goal rescued a draw for Real Madrid at AC Milan as the Spanish side reached the last 16 of the Champions League.

Filippo Inzaghi had scored twice to put Milan in front after Gonzalo Higuain had given Real a first-half lead.

Elsewhere, Bayern Munich joined Chelsea and Real in the last 16 with a 4-0 victory over CFR Cluj-Napoca.

And Marseille made Champions League history scoring the most away goals in the competition beating MSK Zilina 7-0.

Leon’s last-gasp heroics saved Real coach Jose Mourinho from suffering defeat on his return to the San Siro, where he coached Inter Milan for two years.

Real came within inches of taking the lead on 20 minutes but Andrea Pirlo twice headed off the line, first from Higuain’s header and then Angel Di Maria’s volleyed follow-up.

Moments later Kevin-Prince Boateng played in Zlatan Ibrahimovic who was one-on-one with Iker Casillas but his weak shot from an angle hit the keeper’s legs.

Real took the lead just before the break after Di Maria ran at the defence and slipped in Higuain as Alessandro Nesta tried to play offside but stepped up too late, allowing the Argentine to finish coolly from seven yards.

But Milan then sent on veteran Inzaghi who turned the game on its head after a series of Real errors.

Pepe slipped when favourite to reach a Gennaro Gattuso through ball, allowing Ibrahimovic to run in on goal from the left, the Portuguese centre-half even tripping up team-mate Sergio Ramos when trying to do likewise to the big Swede.

Ibrahimovic then slipped as he went to cross but Casillas had already committed himself to come out and as the ball went behind him, he let it slip through his hands, presenting Inzaghi with an easy header home from three yards.

Ten minutes later, Inzaghi had repeated the trick following another Madrid defensive disaster as the master poacher was allowed to run on to a long Gattuso ball forward – the defenders claiming in vain he was offside – and slipping the ball under the advancing Casillas for his 46th Champions League goal.

But then Mourinho threw on Leon and deep into injury time fellow substitute Karim Benzema slipped him in to shoot home between Christian Abbiati’s legs as Real’s coach continued his unbeaten run at the club.

Elsewhere in that group Auxerre defeated Ajax 2-1 to keep alive their hopes of an extended run in the competition – and dent the Dutch side’s chances of progressing.

Marseille produced arguably the performance of the night to boost their hopes of qualification.

Didier Deschamps’ side produced a stunning 7-0 away win, with Andre Pierre Gignac’s hat-trick the highlight.

Gignac scored twice inside the first 21 minutes and further efforts from Gabriel Heinze (24) and Loic Remy (36) made it 4-0 at half-time.

Lucho Gonzalez got a fifth six minutes after the restart, Gignac wrapped up his treble with a 54th-minute header, before Lucho completed the scoring in the 63rd minute.

The French side now face a fight with Spartak Moscow for the second qualifying spot, after Chelsea beat the Russians 4-1 at Stamford Bridge.

Mario Gomez impressed as Bayern Munich made sure of top spot in Group E with a convincing 4-0 defeat of Cluj.

Gomez scored a hat-trick, netting in the 12th, 24th and 70th minutes, before Thomas Muller rounded off a fourth success in as many games for the visitors.

Roma are best placed to join the German side in the last 16 after prevailing 3-2 in an entertaining game with Basel.
